Kungliga Tekniska högskolan,

The research group Cell Profiling at SciLifeLab Stockholm consists of 16 employees that work as research engineers, doctoral students, and researchers. The group is part of the Human Protein Atlas Project (HPA) and has been working for more than ten years to create the Cell Atlas, where the spatiotemporal distribution of proteins is studied on a subcellular level by using immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. The research group is divided into three teams: research, production, and the facility, which is one of the service facilities available on SciLifeLab.

The facility mainly works with external projects and offer unique possibilities for industry, health care and research groups in academia to study protein subcellular localization in cells and tissues using the antibodies generated within the HPA project. The facility also performs internal research projects with focus on technology and method development.

The production team accounts for most of the routine work with the Cell Atlas, while research within the group is closely linked to the work with the Cell Atlas and the facility's needs in external projects. Thus, the entire Cell Profiling team is using a common infrastructure and is working closely together.

Job description

The Human Protein Atlas is looking for two skilled persons – one for the Cell Atlas production team and one for work with service and research projects within the facility team. The work for both positions is very similar and what position that in the end is offered is mostly dependent on personality and suitability within the respective team. All applications will thus be considered for both positions.

Both teams aim to identify the subcellular localization of proteins using antibody-based approaches and the positions offers both laboratory work and analytical work, with emphasis on work in the wet lab. The laboratory work includes sample preparation and imaging with confocal and wide field fluorescence microscopes, while the analytical work includes image and data analysis. For the position in the production team, the job also includes the documentation into the LIMS system and the curation of data in the Human Protein Atlas database (www.proteinatlas.org). In the past, most of the sample preparation was done in cultured cell lines, but now the group also started working with tissue samples. Thus, the positions include the establishment of tissue workflow infrastructure and optimization of protocols for immunohistochemistry and large-scale tissue processing pipelines.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a bachelor or master's degree in life science or related fields, with experience from wet lab work. For the future direction of the Cell Profiling group, we need employees with experience in histology, including tissue sample preparation , immunohistochemistry and microscopy. Tissue sectioning with cryostat and/or microtome is a merit. Experience in working with cell cultures and antibody-based assays is an advantage, as well as basic knowledge in quantitative image analysis and programming. Also experience with clinical samples and knowledge of routines in tissue related work in clinic is a merit.

As a person, you are able to work independently as well as part of a team and show problem-solving abilities when facing work-related issues and problems. You are well organized with good documentation skills and have a good knowledge of English in both speech and writing. You should have an interest in technology and method development.
