Project description

Third-cycle subject: Civil and Architectural Engineering

The Division of Soil and Rock Mechanics (School of Architecture and the Built Environment) has a vacant doctoral (licentiate) student position. The project aims at developing a new measurement method in connection to soil-rock-probing, ram sounding and driving of piles and sheet piles, which is based on vibration measurements on the ground surface. By analysis of the vibration signal, information regarding soil properties is obtained. The method is expected to increase productivity for construction of deep foundations.

Research questions that will be studied include both practical aspects, such as field measurements, and theoretical aspects, such as wave propagation in soil layers. The project includes subjects such as geotechnical engineering, soil dynamics and geophysics. An important part is developing measurement and analysis techniques that can be applied practically in the construction industry. The geotechnical investigation methods that are studied in the project are applied in the industry on a daily basis and the additional vibration measurements can thus have a significant positive effect on how geotechnical information is obtained. Furthermore, applied to pile and sheet pile driving, the method has the potential of reducing uncertainties and increasing productivity.

The position is intended for doctoral studies that lead to a licentiate degree, under the condition that the goals for third-cycle studies are fulfilled. The position implies a study period of two years full-time. In addition, the doctoral student is expected to contribute with teaching activities and other departmental duties by up to 20 % of full-time employment, which means that the position can be prolonged by up to 6 months.

The department intends to apply for additional funding in order to extend the project to a doctoral degree, which would imply an employment period of up to 5 years including departmental duties.
