Project description
Third-cycle subject: Fibre and polymer science/Biotechnology
Eco-friendly materials and products are important ingredients in a society for sustainable development. The Cellulose Biocomposites project is a multidisciplinary effort exploring new opportunities for nanostructured cellulose materials. Research towards new materials and processing concepts is performed, including a sustainability perspective. Participating universities include KTH Royal Inst of Technology, Stockholm, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg and Luleå Univ of Technology. Funding is from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and an additional 3 industrial PhD-student projects are funded by Stora Enso. The goals are new material concepts and knowledge towards better performance, new functionalities and eco-friendly attributes. The project is directed by Prof Lars Berglund at Wallenberg Wood Science Center, Dept of Fiber and Polymer Technology, KTH; blund@kth.se
In order to fabricate molded cellulose fibres and bioplastics with high bio-based mass content, natural binders from polysaccharids, lignin residues, and their derivatives will be explored. Chemoenzymatic modificaton of the lignocellulosic fibers will be optimized for the incorporation of nature binders in molded cellulose fibres. Functionalized lignocellulosic fibres will be further exploited in polymer matrix composites. The required competence should be based on a solid knowledge in surface and colloidal chemistry, materials chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biochemistry as applied to biomaterials in general and specifically on fibres and cellulose systems. Appropriate background for this position is a Master's degree in polymer technology, materials science and engineering, physical chemistry or the equivalent.
