Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för teknikvetenskap

The department of Solid Mechanics pursues basic and applied research in biomechanics, composite mechanics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics and fatigue, material mechanics and paper mechanics. In the applied research, there are strong connections to industry and public actors.

Job description

We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the project Macro- and microscopic deformability of fiber networks made from softwood. Many paper and board products are based on softwood fibres. During converting of the products, they are plastically deformed and partly damaged in folding, creasing or embossing operations. This deformation occurs both in macroscale and in microscale. It is therefore important to understand the influence of the raw material, product structure and process conditions on the convertibility of the products. This knowledge will help to optimize the existing products, but also lay the basis for new products. Here, carefully executed experiments focusing on load cases with considerable macroscopic stress gradients and strain gradients will be combined with advanced fibre network analyses using state-of-the-art modelling tools. The influence of fibre morphology, product structure and process conditions on the convertibility both in macro- and microscale will be studied. A clear objective of the project is that the main results are verified and demonstrated in either laboratory, pilot-scale or in customer trials.

The project, which is part of Treesearch - Sweden's largest investment in national cooperation, knowledge dissemination and competence building in research on new materials and specialty chemicals from Swedish forest raw materials, will be run in close cooperation with the industrial partner Holmen. Questions regarding industrial implementation of research results will therefore also be central to the project.

The position as postdoctoral fellow primarily refers to one year. Provided that the research is successful and the funding can be arranged, the employment can be extended by a maximum of one year.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a doctoral degree (completed in the last three years) in engineering mechanics, particularly solid or computational mechanics. Particularly advantageous merits for this position are documented experience of developing and programing finite elements or constitutive relations, conducting non-linear simulations incorporating large deformations, strain, fracture or contact, and experience of experimental research.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for research, have the ability to work both independently and in a team-based environment. Applicants should also have a good level of cooperative and communicative abilities. Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
