Project description
Third-cycle subject: Computer Science or Information and Communication Technology
Recently, in a very tough competition, KTH was awarded a new Swedish competence center on Trustworthy Edge Computing Systems and Applications (TECoSA). The focus is on challenges related to safety, security, and predictability.
This announcement calls for PhD students in the area of safe edge computing applications. Edge computing opens an opportunity for real-time processing of large amounts of data and real-time decision making in a wide range of systems including human-in-the-loop system and systems relying on machine learning.
We look for (up to) three students interested in one or more of the following areas:
- Safe human-machine interaction (supervised by Iolanda Leite at RPL): The student shall explore the relationship between safety and system usability in safety-critical contexts that include interaction with humans. Safe systems may not be necessarily be perceived as safe, whereas unsafe systems might be perceived as such, depending on the type, form, and structure of the feedback provided to the user. Understanding these tradeoffs is vital to good system design and acceptance.
- Safe reinforcement learning (supervised by Jana Tumova at RPL): Reinforcement learning is a promising approach to decision making. However, ensuring safe exploration is a challenging problem. The student shall tackle this problem by utilizing probabilistic verification-based techniques to supress decisions potentially leading to provable and/or perceived unsafety.
- Domain-specific probabilistic programming (supervised by David Broman at SCS): The student will investigate and develop new semantic constructs for domain-specific probabilistic programming languages, especially targeted for safe computing in the edge. In particular, focus will be on programming language semantics and probabilistic machine learning.
