Third-cycle subject: Planning and decision analysis with a focus on urban and regional studies

We are looking for a doctoral student for a licentiate in urban and regional studies. The work includes working in research projects in the Safety and Security Research Group (STF) with remote sensing data, GIS and statistical analyses.

In the project, we want to understand how remote data analysis sheds light on the relationships between urban environments and levels and patterns for specific crimes. We examine, with qualitative and quantitative analysis, the relationship between the characteristics of the built environment extracted from remote analysis and conventional data (factors that also affect levels and the geography of crime). Practitioners will be involved in the project, good communication skills is important.

The work is carried out in close collaboration with the project manager and partners in Geoinformatics and Geography, and requires the ability to work independently.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by:Prof Vania Ceccato and Dr Andrea Nascetti.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

We are looking for a candidate with good knowledge in GIS and remote sensing technologies. You must have experience using Excel and SPSS. Experience of data analysis using algorithms that use machine learning and experience of modern cloud-based process platforms (such as Google Earth Engine) If you have experience with ESA DIAS, it is an advantage. For the position, it is important to show a broader interest in societal issues and merit to have worked with the application of remote sensing data in Sweden. English language skills in speach and writing are a requirement for the position.

  • analyse and work with complex issues.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
