Geoinformatics with specialization in Geospatial Big Data Analytics for Sustainable Development

Subject description

The subject is multidisciplinary and involves the science and technology of acquiring, processing, analyzing and mining Earth observation and other geospatial big data using cloud processing platforms and machine learning methods. It also includes the application of geospatial big data analytics for urban analysis, environmental change monitoring, natural resource management and disaster management to support sustainable development. The subject integrates knowledge and research approaches from different disciplines such as geomatics, surveying, information technology, computer science, environmental science and urban and regional planning. 

Duties

The position includes teaching and research. Teaching is mainly at bachelor’s and master’s level, but also at doctoral level. This primarily involves teaching and examination of existing courses, course development and supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral students. The associate professor is expected to contribute to research and develop research activities, including, for instance, seeking external funding in the field and developing collaborations with academic environments within and outside KTH and societal actors, as well as contributing to KTH's work in sustainable development. The associate professor is also expected to participate in other activities related to research, teaching and collaboration. Leadership assignments may be part of the teaching and research duties. The associate professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within three years. If necessary, a language plan will be drawn up at the start of employment.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  1. been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve, and
  2. demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • Research expertise in the field demonstrated by, among others, publications in reputable international journals. This also includes the ability to seek and obtain external research funding for the development of the subject area.
  • teaching skills in the subject area, including experience in supervising master’s and doctoral students.
  • ability to conduct research and collaborate in interdisciplinary research environments and projects.  

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and communicate research and development work.
  • the ability to develop and manage activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equality issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • administrative skills.  

It is also important that the applicant has

  • the ability to collaborate with private and public stakeholders to develop education and research activities that meet the needs of society.
