Geodesy with specialization in Civil Engineering

Subject description

The subject of geodesy is the science of accurately measuring and understanding Earth's geometric shape and size, orientation in space, and gravity, which includes the definition and realization of coordinate reference systems. The main areas studied by geodesy  are development of surveying techniques, definition and maintenance of reference systems for positioning, determination of land uplift, tectonic movements, sea level and the so-called the geoid (the reference surface for heights). Geodesy is by its nature global and international cooperation is a prerequisite.

The subject includes industrial measurements (engineering geodesy), cadaster surveying, measurements for map production in the land surveying sector, measurements in connection with property registration as well as regional geoid determination and processing/analysis of space geodetic observations from various satellite systems, for e.g. climate-related research.

Duties

The main duties are research and teaching within the subject, as well as maintaining national and international contacts. The associate professor is expected to lead a research group. Teaching within the subject includes supervision of PhD students and degree projects as well as teaching in bachelor, master and research level courses. In addition, faculty assignments occur within the framework of KTH operations.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  1. been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is significant to the subject matter of the appointment and the duties that it will involve, and
  2. demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • research expertise in the subject field
  • teaching skills in in the subject field
  • expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • interpersonal skills.
  • the ability to pursue third-stream activities and communicate the importance of the subject in a broader perspective.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • administrative expertise
