Urban Design with specialization in Spatial Analysis

Subject description

The subject area of urban design includes development of theory and methods as well as research into urban design practice with a close connection to planning. The specialization includes spatial urban analysis, urban form analysis, urban morphology, space syntax and modelling. The subject area belongs within architecture and concerns the development of knowledge about cities and communities, specifically how built structures and artefacts affect people's everyday life, living conditions and sustainable development. The subject area is cross- and interdisciplinary and integrates technology, natural and social sciences as well as humanities and design.

Duties

Work duties include teaching and research.

Teaching includes participation at bachelor-, master- and doctoral level in architecture and urban design. Examining responsibilities and pedagogical development work are included. Educational leadership assignments such as program directorship may also be relevant.

The research concerns development and application of the subject area, which includes theories and methods in development work and design in urban planning with a broad theoretical and methodological approach.

The lecturer is expected to independently conduct research projects, apply for external grants and contribute to the research environment, establish new or develop collaborations with different competences within and outside the department, nationally and internationally, including interdisciplinary contexts. External actors are, for example, public administration, business, civil society or private actors.

Both in research and teaching, the position may include administrative assignments and management assignments.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  1. been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve , and
  2. demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • research expertise in the subject field, this includes the ability to independently, and in collaboration, apply for and obtain external research grants and run research projects
  • teaching skills in the subject field, this includes experience in teaching at several levels including doctoral supervision and educational leadership, as well as the ability to relate, in teaching, to contemporary challenges in architecture, urban design and planning practice including theoretical and methodological issues.

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • the ability to pursue third-stream activities, especially in cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral contexts , and also provide information about research and development work.
  • expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • administrative expertise
  • interpersonal skills.
