School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Job description

The division of Biomedical Imaging within the department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems conducts research on tomographic image reconstruction. One of the topic of interest is the simultaneous reconstruction of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images and patient motion during the PET data acquisition, with the goal of increasing the diagnostic power of PET imaging for lung cancer at an early stage. We have now developed a theoretical framework for the above and have an established collaboration with clinical partners at KI/KS Huddinge that will secure access to clinical data

We are now looking for a post-doctor to implement our in-silico developed algorithms in the typical clinical workflow for lung cancer screening and further develop the theoretical framework of spatiotemporal image reconstruction.

The post-doctor is expected to:

  • Implement, together with a software consultant, a pipeline for pre-processing of PET raw data.
  • Integrate the forward projector from the PET reconstruction package SIRF (or STIR) into the python library ODL developed at KTH. A collaboration with the main developer of STIR (Kris Thielemans, UCL, London) and with the software consultant in the same project will facilitate this task.
  • Improve the efficiency of the present algorithm in order to cope with the size of the clinical image reconstruction in acceptable time frames.
  • Explore different strategies for attenuation correction.
  • Develop and assess novel and theoretically founded improvements to our framework for joint reconstruction and dynamics recovery in PET
  • Develop strategies for evaluating objective measure of image quality that highly correlate with pulmonary lesion detectability.
  • Publish the results of their work in international journals and conferences. Since this project is (partly) financed by Digital Futures-Demonstrator projects, we will also aim to advertise the results at some high-impact event.

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Work in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH  relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Sciences, Computer Sciences, Physics, or related engineering disciplines. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Substantial experience with either tomographic image reconstruction or with handling of complex data structure and software development.
  • Experience with deep learning.
  • Teaching experience and proven ability for disseminating research results in different environments (specific research community, research community in other disciplines, students and general audience, media) is highly considered.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Familiarity with STIR, SIRF or ODL will constitute a substantial advantage for carrying on this project.
  • Experience with clinical or preclinical PET imaging will be meritorious
  • Research expertise
  • Teaching abilities
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality
  • Collaborative abilities
  • Independence

Personal characteristics

The candidate must be able to work in autonomy and, at the same time, possess the ability to efficiently work in a multidisciplinary, multicultural environment. This means that the candidate must possess an awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.

Perseverance is also required to be able to overcome all obstacles that we will certainly be facing during the 2-years span of the project.

This project focuses on porting newly developed algorithm to the clinical workflow, therefore an attitude and willingness to work with real-world data is necessary.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
