School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Job description

Electromobility is growing at an impressive rate with increasing demands on energy efficiency and sustainability. Electric machines are arguably the most critical components in electric vehicle drivetrains. Their design choices can impact enormously on the future of electromobility.
A growing concern is the increasing use of permanent magnets based on rare-earth materials in electric machine designs.  Rare-earth materials are not environmentally friendly and expensive to extract, with a politically-driven supply chain.

This project wants to study an alternative design based on the variable-pole induction machine concept. This magnet-free concept can change the number of magnetic poles during operation with electronic switching, allowing extended torque-speed range and competitive efficiency.
The position belongs to the division of Electric Power and Energy Systems at the school of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Focus is on the electromagnetic/thermal design and loss analysis of a variable-pole induction machine, considering the effects at system level. An international player in the automotive market will collaborate with the project, framing the real-case scenario. The position will also be linked to the Swedish Electromobility Centre, where the division has a co-leading position in Theme 2 (Electric Drives and Charging).
