School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

The work will be conducted on the central campus of KTH, at the Division of Electromagnetic Engineering and Fusion Science (EMF), at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). The division comprises research groups within electromagnetic theory, antenna design, diagnostic techniques for electrical insulation, electric power engineering, electromagnetic compatibility and fusion plasma physics. The staff has a multicultural background and the working language is English. The division has many research collaborations with partners worldwide, and is involved in several European and national projects.

The research group in electromagnetic field theory is now looking for a PhD student in electromagnetic theory for medical applications. The project aims to develop and evaluate a non-invasive method to stimulate the activity in brain tissue, using gold nanoparticles (GNP). The method is intended to be used for treatment of patients with neurological disorders, such as e.g. Parkinson’s disease. The existing methods for deep brain stimulation have several important limitations such as invasiveness, limited miniaturization, poor resolution and limited spatial coverage (not able to monitor or stimulate a sufficient number of neurons). The long-term goal of the proposed research project is to create a wearable non-implantable adaptive neuro stimulation device for brain disorders. The project is based on previous work by the main supervisor, on theoretical and simulation methods for studying signal propagation and energy absorption in GNP-treated cancer tissue.

The position includes analysis and further development of electromagnetic field theory to identify potential new solutions, and verification mainly through numerical simulations, but experimental verification may also be relevant.

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

Supervision: Associate Professor Mariana Dalarsson

What we offer

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second-cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed on their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

Other than the general requirements above, the applicant should have a good understanding of electromagnetic field theory.

Experience in some of the following areas: waveguide theory, scattering theory, electromagnetic computation and simulation tools, is not mandatory, but will be highly valued.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
